The behaviors are typical, not constant and simultaneous. We are reading about a lifetime achievement recognition, not her daily planner. The shift away from present-tense translation removes possible overtones of workaholism and adds the quality of persevering faithfulness.” (p.271)

石山，不只是磐石

西奈山

 

「妳忘記了拯救妳的神，不記得防護妳的石山。」以賽亞書17:10《環球聖經譯本》。這個譯本給「石山」的註：「原文צוּר有時可指一塊石頭，例如“磐石”，但通常都是指“石山”。石山上的洞穴可以藏身，敵人不易找到，地勢險要高峻，敵人難以進攻，因此是避難和受保護的處所，在聖經裡常用作耶和華的稱號，喻指祂是子民的保護者和避難所。」一百年前的中譯本可能不知道以色列和那裡周圍的地區原來有許多山一整座完全是石，沒有泥，沒有草木，所以沒想到「石」原來可以是石山，所以總是譯作「磐石」。相比起石山，磐石實在太小了。

先前我以為聖經說嗎哪味道像芫荽種子（coriander seeds），回來看清楚經文才發現只是形狀像！不要緊，也嚐嚐，覺得味道像不辣的黑椒，適合我這個不吃辣的人。「……『嗎哪』，它像芫荽種子，白色，味道像有蜜的薄餅。」（出埃及記16:31）

關於沉默的詩？

 

「有人從西珥向我呼叫，說：

『看守的人哪，黑夜還有多長？

　看守的人哪，夜還有多長？』

　看守的人說：

『早晨來臨，黑夜也來臨；

　你們若要問，就問吧！

電影想像

 

這四句詩使我想像到一齣電影－－不是真有這麼一齣，而是我綜合了一些電影的印象、甚至加上看過的小說，想像到這個意境：故事關於主角的成長奮鬥，時代動盪，他又身世複雜，而自小就有位身分不明的嚴師既鍛鍊他又照顧他，不過，他也把自己經歷到的一些苦難創痛歸咎於這個老師。到電影過了五分之四，主角已經走過千山萬水，雖然仍在水深火熱當中，不過他已經熬煉出－－不是一身好本領，也不是麻木或看化，而是深沉的悔過、仁愛、智慧，縱使仍有看不透的地方。電影最後一截，水更深火更熱，他終於明白到自己的學習的契機和要理都來自這位嚴師－－恩師；而且無論如何，在這個正在崩塌的世界裡，恩師已經是他在世上惟一的親人。

「雖然主以艱難給你們當餅，

以困苦給你們當水，

孜然

 聖經裡有沒有教我們做事要變通？

「要使黑籽脫粒，不會用碾禾橇，也不會用車輪來碾孜然；

黑籽是用杖打下來的，孜然是用棍打下來的。」

（以賽亞書28:27，《環球聖經譯本》）

《環球聖經譯本》註：「要使小麥或大麥由莖上脫粒，正常的方法是用碾禾橇，或用車輪碾（見賽21:10“碾軋的禾”註），但是黑籽和孜然顆粒細小，而且將會用作香料，不該在採收的過程裡碾碎，所以要用其他方法（用杖和棍打）。本節意思可能是比喻做事要有智慧，按具體情況而定，不應一成不變。」

《環》關於孜然的註：「又叫“枯茗”，現代學名是Cuminum cyminum，根據《中國植物誌》是“孜然芹”，與大茴香不同屬。孜然芹的種子現在通常簡稱“孜然”。」

棚子、雲柱、火柱有甚麼關係？

很美的畫面，有沒有畫家畫過呢？ 「到那日，……耶和華會在……錫安的各個聚會之上，日間造雲和煙，夜間造煌煌烈焰；的確，在每個榮耀者之上會有蔭庇，有一個棚子，日間讓人遮蔭抵禦炎熱，也作避難所和藏身處，讓人躲避狂風暴雨。」（以賽亞書4:2-6，《環球聖經譯本》） 

不久前的住棚節期間，聽到一個問題和答案，並非關於這段以賽亞書經文，而關於摩西五經裡叫以色列人住棚的吩咐。那條問題是，以色列人在曠野住的是帳幕，帳幕是毛氈做的，棚子是枝葉搭的，兩者不同，為甚麼說以色列人在曠野曾經住棚子？ 

聖經裡的nebel是怎樣的樂器？是「瑟」嗎？

「The nebel…comes from a Hebrew root meaning “skin-bottle” or “jar”; it has a waterskin-shaped sound box.」(Philip J. King and Lawrence E. Stager, Life in Biblical Israel [Louisville, KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2001], 292.)

Othmar Keel, The Symbolism of the Biblical World: Ancient Near Eastern Iconography and the Book of Psalms (Timothy J. Hallett trans.; New York, Seabury Press, 1978), 349：「The obvious suggestion is that nēbel denoted this curved type of lyre.」See picture 233 on p.169. 

See the coins of the Jewish revolt against Roman domination (A.D. 132-36). 在這兩個錢幣上可以清楚看見kinnor和nebel形狀的分別，也看得見nebel的形狀像瓶子。

試譯作......

聖經裡的kinnor是怎樣的「琴」？

「席上，他們在琴、瑟、鼓、笛聲中飲酒作樂， 卻毫不理會耶和華的作為。」（以賽亞書5:12）

古以色列的所謂「琴」、聖經裡的kinnor（כנור）到底中譯作甚麼才比較準確？近日看見參考書說，kinnor就是lyre (1)。而lyre的中譯名是「里拉琴」。然而「里拉」音譯自希臘文，譯希伯來文的時候如果用希臘文讀音，會很奇怪。我最近想到的兩個嘗試是「軸琴」、「樑琴」。根據兩本參考書，kinnor和古代其他撥弦樂器的最大分別是頂部有一條yoke / crossbar / bridge (2)。中文或可用「軸」字或「樑」字表示。而在廣東話裡「軸琴」諧音「俗琴」，「樑琴」諧音「良琴」，所以我較喜歡「樑琴」。

寶石的默想

「經文（創2:10-12）中提到比遜河流過的地方有金子，還有珍珠和瑪瑙，都是一些名貴的寶石。......列出這些寶石有什麼特殊意義麼？經文中還特別說到『那地的金子是好的』。再者，所列出的名貴寶石，說實在，不像銅鐵可以在生活裡拿來作鍋盆器具。寶石在這世上的意義，就只為了裝飾，以美感著稱，沒有任何實質的功用。然而，聖經沒有指出銅鐵是好的，反而說這些寶石金子是好的。而且從創世記後面的經文裡，也可看到神所創造的地方，是人要被賦予開墾責任的園子。因此藉著人手的開墾，這些寶石會一一從地裡被發掘出來，然後，便會被用來雕琢成各種形式的鑲飾，成為美的創造一部分。由此可見，我們的上帝是一個看重美超過功用性，也充滿藝術美感的神。」（莫非，〈藝術創造的奧祕〉，《阡陌文藝雙月刊》［香港：2015年1月，第二期］，12）

Roland de Vaux的Ancient Israel: Its Life and Institutions中譯本

原來Roland de Vaux的Ancient Israel: Its Life and Institutions早已有中譯本，叫做《古經之風俗及典章制度》，不過只譯了原著的Introduction、Part I、Part II。中譯本在中大圖書館有，基道網頁也顯示有售。英文版在Google Book可以預覽。

「磐石」可能是石山

在希臘旅行，車駛近哥林多的時候，導遊說：「Look at this rock.」一座巍峨的石山屹立在哥林多城旁邊。這個景色很好地說明了聖經裡說上帝是Rock是甚麼意思（如申命記32:4）。

The fifteen-volume Theological Dictionary of the Old Testament is a recommended set of reference books for looking up the background, meaning and usage of Old Testament Hebrew words.
When one cannot go to a library immediately, the partial preview on Google Books can prove helpful.

I have not made this link table for the sake of putting it up on the blog. Rather, I made it for my own use, but as a by-product I can share the convenience here as well.

Recently I found that on Amazon's preview, not many pages of this set can be seen. Rather, Google Books share more pages. So, below are two sets of links.

Afikoman / afikomen：飯後同樂餅

猶太傳統逾越節晚餐裡的afikoman（afikomen），應該怎樣譯成中文呢？

這個英文詞是音譯亞蘭文 אֶפִּיקוֹמָן。據 Jastrow 的詞典 (1) ，這個詞還可以拼作：
אֶפִּיקוֹמוֹן、אֶפִּיקוֹמִין。

Jastrow給的解釋是：希臘文ἐπὶ κωμον（留意這是兩個詞） ，英文 ‘to the aftermeal entertainment!’ Jastrow說，複數形式אֶפִּיקוֹמִין的意思是things belonging to the after-meal, dessert。這正是逾越節晚餐裡那塊餅的基本用途：餐後吃的小食。

Encyclopedia of the World of the Bible

Have you ever tried to locate a copy of a volume of the great Hebrew set Encyclopedia of the World of the Bible but got confused about how the libraries represent them in their online catalogs?  Some weeks ago I sorted out my confusion about this. Here are my findings.

1. This set is written in Hebrew, although people have given it an English title Encyclopedia of the World of the Bible. I have not seen any English translation of this set. I have not seen this English title in the volumes of this set itself. So perhaps this is not an official title. The real name of this set is...

2. The set has two names! Actually there is one older and one newer version. Respectively, they are:
